Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP): The Complete Beginner’s Guide

Plein Air Québec·Published on August 14, 2026·📖 3 min read

Everything to start stand-up paddle boarding: gear, technique, safety (PFD), maintenance and where to paddle in Quebec.

Stand-up paddle boarding — SUP for short — has become one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways to get on the water in Quebec. You stand on a large floating board and move using a long paddle. It’s easy to learn, gentle on the joints and incredibly versatile: a calm sunrise cruise, a workout, fishing, yoga on the water… This guide covers everything you need to start well.

What is stand-up paddle boarding (SUP)?

Stand-up paddling means standing upright on a stable board and paddling on one side then the other to move and steer. Compared to a kayak or canoe, standing gives a better view of the bottom and the scenery, works the whole body (legs, core, back) and is easy to transport — especially with modern inflatable boards that pack into a backpack.

It’s a beginner-friendly activity: most people stand and paddle on their very first outing on calm water.

What do you need to start?

The essentials are few:

  • A board suited to your size and use. The most important beginner choice — see How to choose a paddle board and Inflatable vs hard?.
  • A paddle adjustable to the right length (about 20–25 cm taller than you).
  • A PFD (life jacket) — required on board in Quebec.
  • A leash connecting you to the board: your float stays within reach.
  • A pump (inflatable board) to reach 12–15 psi.

On an inflatable board, pressure makes all the difference: properly inflated, it becomes stiff, fast and stable.

How to stand up and paddle (the basics)

  1. Get in where it’s deep enough that the fin doesn’t hit the bottom.
  2. Start on your knees, centered on the board, a hand on each side.
  3. Find your balance, then stand one foot at a time, feet hip-width and parallel, knees soft, eyes on the horizon (not your feet).
  4. Paddle: top hand on the grip, lower hand on the shaft, plant the blade ahead of you and pull back with fairly straight arms — power comes from the core, not the arms.
  5. To turn, paddle longer on one side.

Safety first

  • Wear your PFD. In Quebec, one life jacket per person is required on board.
  • Use your leash. In current or wind, it keeps you with the board.
  • Watch the wind. A tailwind pushes you away from shore; always start into the wind so the return is easier.
  • Respect cold water in spring and fall: dress for the water temperature, not the air.
