Seasonal clothing, required PFD, cold water, wind: how to dress and gear up to paddle safely.
Paddleboarding is gentle… as long as you respect the water and weather. Here’s how to dress and gear up — a companion to our paddleboarding guide.
A PFD is required
In Canada, a craft like a SUP must carry an approved PFD (life jacket) per person on board. In Quebec, on most waters, it’s required — and above all, it saves lives. Choose one that’s well-fitted and comfortable: a PFD you find pleasant is one you’ll actually wear.
Tip: belt-style inflatable PFDs are popular for SUP in hot weather, but a classic vest remains safest for beginners and in cold water.
The leash: your board is your biggest float
If you fall, a leash keeps the board within reach — essential in wind or current, where a board drifts faster than you can swim.
Dress for the WATER temperature
The golden rule: dress for the water, not the air.
- Summer, warm water: swimwear, quick-dry clothing, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen. You tan (and burn) fast on the water.
- Spring / fall, cold water: water below ~15 °C is dangerous if you go in. Wear a wetsuit or a drysuit, plus neoprene booties.
- Always: dry spare clothes in a dry bag.
Wind and safety
- Start into the wind so the return is easier.
- Stay near shore until your balance is solid.
- Tell someone your route and return time.
- Avoid paddling alone in cold water.
Geared up, all that’s left is to find beautiful water: see our map of paddleboard spots in Quebec. Safety essentials below.
