Length, width, thickness and volume: the right paddle board size for your weight and level.
“What size paddle board do I need?” Three numbers matter: width (stability), length (speed/maneuverability) and volume (float). An excerpt from our buying guide.
Width = stability
The #1 factor for beginners. 32–34 in forgives balance wobbles. Under 30 in is faster but tippier — for experienced paddlers.
Length = speed vs maneuverability
- 9–10.6 ft: nimble, perfect to start and play near shore.
- 10.6–11.6 ft: the versatile compromise, a bit faster.
- 12.6 ft+: touring/racing, fast in a straight line.
Volume and weight capacity
The board must float your weight + your gear with margin. Check the stated maximum capacity (kg/lb): aim comfortably above your weight.
Simple rule: the heavier you are, the more volume and width you need. When in doubt, go wider.
And the paddle?
Set it about 20–25 cm taller than you. Details in improve your paddleboarding.
