How to Choose a Paddle Board (SUP): The Buying Guide

Plein Air Québec·Published on August 14, 2026·📖 1 min read

Size, volume, shape, inflatable or hard: how to choose the right paddle board for your weight and use.

Which paddle board should I choose?” is the #1 beginner question. Good news: a few guidelines are enough to decide well. This guide is part of our complete paddleboarding guide.

1. Volume and weight capacity

A board must float your weight (you + your gear) with margin. Too little volume = a board that sinks and feels tippy. To start, aim for a capacity clearly above your body weight. Most makers list a maximum capacity in kg/lb.

2. Size: length, width, thickness

  • Length: 10 to 11 ft is the do-everything beginner size (versatility + maneuverability).
  • Width: the key stability factor. 32 to 34 in forgives a lot early on.
  • Thickness: ~6 in on inflatables for good stiffness.

Simple beginner rule: wider = more stable. You can go narrower later, once your balance is dialed in.

3. Shape by use

  • All-around: the best first choice — good on lakes, slow rivers and small waves.
  • Touring (pointed nose): faster and more directional for long distances.
  • Race, surf, yoga, fishing: specialized shapes to consider later.

4. Inflatable or hard?

For 90% of Quebec beginners, inflatable wins: transport, storage, price, durability. We compare everything in Inflatable vs hard?.

5. What (often) comes in the kit

Inflatable kits frequently include a paddle, pump, leash, carry bag and repair kit — great value to get everything at once. Check for a high-pressure pump (12–15 psi) and an adjustable paddle.

In short

For a first purchase in Quebec: an all-around inflatable, 10–11 ft, 32–34 in wide, with comfortable weight capacity and a complete kit. The rest (PFD, dry bag, clothing) is covered in What to wear + safety.
