The leash connects you to your board — a key safety item. Leash types and which to pick.
The leash — the cord connecting you to the board — is one of paddleboarding’s most important and most overlooked safety items. A companion to What to wear + safety.
Why it’s essential
After a fall, your board is your biggest float. In wind or current, it drifts faster than you can swim. The leash keeps it within reach — it can literally save you.
Leash types
- Straight (coiled) leash: the most common, versatile, for lakes and flat water.
- Ankle leash: attached at the ankle, standard for cruising and surf.
- Calf leash: popular for racing/touring (less drag in the water).
- Quick-release (waist) leash: required in rivers / moving water — in current, a fixed ankle leash can be dangerous (snag risk). Wear it at the waist with quick release.
Simple rule
- Flat water (lake): classic ankle leash. ✅
- River / current: waist quick-release leash. ✅
- Never a fixed ankle leash in moving water.
Combined with a PFD and the right clothing (see What to wear), the leash rounds out your basic safety. Leashes and PFDs below.
