The simple plan for a great first SUP outing: spot, gear, launch and first strokes.
First time on a paddle board? Follow this plan and you’ll be paddling standing in minutes. It’s the starting point of our complete guide.
Before you go
- Choose calm, sheltered water (small lake, bay), no wind, no waves.
- Check your gear: board inflated to the right pressure, paddle at the right length, PFD worn, leash attached.
- Dress for the water temperature (see What to wear).
In the water, step by step
- Wade in to your knees, set the board down, climb on kneeling at the center.
- Paddle a few strokes on your knees to feel the balance.
- Stand one foot at a time, feet hip-width, knees soft, eyes on the horizon.
- Paddle each side, don’t clench your toes.
- If you fall, fall away from the board, climb back on from the center.
The 3 beginner mistakes
- Looking at your feet (guaranteed wobble).
- Stiff legs (chop knocks you off).
- Starting with a tailwind (exhausting return) — start into the wind.
