How to fall without injury and climb back onto your paddle board after a spill.
Falling is part of paddle boarding — even experts fall. What matters is falling safely and getting back on easily. A companion to our paddleboarding guide.
Falling well
- Fall into the water, away from the board (never onto it, to avoid injury).
- Keep the paddle if you can, or retrieve it after.
- In shallow water, fall flat, not feet-first (rocks).
Getting back on
- Swim to the center of the board (near the handle).
- Grab the far rail, kick your legs to get horizontal.
- Pull your torso onto the board, then slide one leg up, then the other.
- Get back on your knees at the center, catch your breath, stand up.
Your leash keeps the board within reach after every fall — that’s why it’s essential, especially in wind (see safety).
In cold water
A cold-water fall shocks the body (cold-water shock). Wear the right neoprene thickness and get back on fast. Details: What to wear + PFD.
Practice the climb-back near shore from the start: when it counts, it’ll be a reflex. PFDs and leashes below.
