Start yoga on a paddle board: gear, anchoring, easy poses and safety.
SUP yoga — yoga on a paddle board — adds balance, calm and a beautiful setting to your practice. Here’s how to start. A companion to our paddleboarding guide.
The right gear
- A wide, stable board (32–34 in), with a comfortable non-slip deck.
- Very calm, sheltered, shallow water.
- An anchor (small weight + line) to stay put, or a dock tie-off.
Ease in
- Anchor the board in calm water.
- Start kneeling or in child’s pose to feel the stability.
- Move to seated poses and all fours (cat-cow).
- Keep a wide base and eyes fixed on one point.
Easy starter poses
- Child’s pose, cat-cow, downward dog (feet wide), plank, seated twist.
- Keep movements slow: the board rewards smoothness.
Safety
- Dress to fall in (you will, and it’s refreshing).
- Keep a PFD on board; in cold water, stay cautious.
Falling is part of it — see how to climb back easily. Stable boards below.
