Paddleboarding for Beginners in Quebec: The Complete Starter Guide

Plein Air Québec·Published on July 10, 2026·📖 2 min read

Choosing a board, mandatory gear, balance techniques and safety rules: everything to start paddleboarding in Quebec.

Paddleboarding (SUP) is Quebec's fastest-growing water sport — and for good reason: 30 minutes is enough to stand up and paddle. Here is everything you need to start on the right foot.

Why try paddleboarding?

It is accessible (no exceptional fitness required), complete (core, balance, gentle cardio) and contemplative: standing on the water, you see the bottom, the fish, the scenery. It is also one of the cheapest water sports once you own the gear.

Which board should you choose?

Type For Pros Cons
All-around inflatable (10'6"-11') Beginners, families Easy transport, stable, affordable Slower
Rigid all-around Regular use Better glide Transport, storage
Touring (12'6"+) Long distances Speed, tracking Less stable
Yoga/fitness Zen practice Very stable, wide Slow

Our beginner pick: a 10'6" to 11' inflatable, 32-34 in wide. Stable, backpack-portable, and enough for 90% of outings.

Mandatory and recommended equipment

In Canada, Transport Canada requires on board (or worn):

  • PFD (personal flotation device) — worn, non-negotiable in cold water;
  • Whistle attached to the PFD;
  • 15 m buoyant heaving line depending on context.

Strongly recommended: leash (your board is your lifebuoy), clothing for the WATER temperature (not the air), waterproof phone pouch.

Standing up and keeping your balance

  1. Start kneeling at the centre of the board, paddle across.
  2. Place your feet one at a time where your knees were, hip-width apart.
  3. Look at the horizon, never your feet — soft knees.
  4. Paddle! A moving board is far more stable than a stopped one.

Safety rules in Quebec

  • Cold water is a real danger: in May-June the water is often below 15 °C. Cold shock is the leading cause of SUP drownings. Wetsuit recommended outside July-August.
  • Tailwind at launch is the classic trap: always head out into the wind, so it pushes you home.
  • Check the forecast and gusts before every outing; under 10-15 knots to start.
  • Stay close to shore on your first outings.

Where to learn in Quebec

Many calm lakes are perfect for beginners — browse our paddleboard listings and filter by region. Beaches with rentals are ideal for a first try before buying. Several sailing schools and nautical centres offer SUP introduction lessons.

Common beginner mistakes

  1. Holding the paddle backwards (the blade angle goes forward).
  2. Looking at your feet instead of the horizon.
  3. Underestimating wind and cold water.
  4. Paddling without a PFD or leash.
  5. Buying a board too narrow to "progress faster".

FAQ

How much does a beginner board cost? A decent inflatable runs $400-700 with paddle and pump. Below $300, stiffness usually disappoints.

Is paddleboarding hard? No: on calm water, most people stand within 30 minutes.

Do I need a licence? No licence, but Transport Canada safety gear is mandatory.

Can you SUP anywhere in Quebec? Almost: lakes, calm rivers and protected river sections. Check local restrictions on each listing.
