The most common beginner paddle board mistakes — and how to fix them right away.
Most beginner struggles come from a few simple, fixable mistakes. Here are the 8 most common. A companion to our tips to improve.
- Looking at your feet. Your eyes should fix the horizon — that’s what stabilizes you.
- Stiff legs. Bend your knees: soft legs absorb chop.
- Paddling with your arms. Power comes from the core; keep arms fairly straight.
- Holding the paddle backward. The blade angles forward (dihedral toward the nose).
- Standing too far back on the board: the nose lifts and you brake. Stay centered (handle between your feet).
- Starting with a tailwind. Start into the wind: the return is easier.
- Skipping the leash (or the wrong one). Essential — and quick-release in rivers.
- Under-inflating the board. A soft board “sticks” to the water: inflate to 12–15 psi.
Bonus: never go without a PFD or without checking the water temperature.
