Introduce kids to paddleboarding safely: age, PFD, sharing a board and family-friendly outings.
Paddleboarding is a wonderful family activity: kids love the stability of a big board and being close to the water. Here’s how to do it well. A companion to our paddleboarding guide.
At what age?
As soon as a child is comfortable in the water and will wear a PFD, they can hop on — first sitting at the front of a parent’s board. Around 6–8+ many paddle solo on a stable board, on calm water, supervised.
The gear
- A wide, stable board (34 in+) with good weight capacity to carry two.
- A child-sized PFD (required, non-negotiable).
- Calm, shallow, sheltered water.
Our tips
- Keep first outings short, with lots of swim breaks.
- An adult kneeling (more stable) with the child in front.
- Stay near shore, never in strong wind.
- Make it fun: it’s the best way to create future paddlers.
Kids get cold and tired faster: watch the water temperature (see What to wear + PFD).
