Hiking for Beginners in Quebec: Gear, Tips and Easy Trails

Plein Air Québec·Published on July 10, 2026·📖 3 min read

How to pick your first hike, what to pack, how to dress and where to walk: the beginner’s guide, with easy trails by region.

Hiking is Quebec's most accessible sport: hundreds of trails, four seasons, zero motorized gear. But a bad first experience (blisters, storms, a trail too hard) can put you off for good. Here is how to start right.

Choosing your first hike

Three simple criteria:

  1. Distance: 4-6 km round trip maximum for a first outing.
  2. Elevation gain: under 250 m — elevation, not distance, is what tires you.
  3. Popularity: a busy, well-marked trail forgives navigation mistakes.

Browse our hiking listings by region: each shows level and practical info.

Understanding distance and elevation

Rule of thumb: 1 km on flat = 15 minutes; every 100 m of gain adds 10-15 minutes. A 6 km loop with 300 m of gain takes 2 to 2.5 hours with breaks. Double it with young kids.

Essential equipment

You don't need $1,000 of gear to walk 5 km:

  • Footwear: lugged-sole running shoes are fine for easy trails. High boots become useful on rocky terrain.
  • 15-20 L pack with water (1 L minimum per person), snacks, rain shell.
  • Layered clothing: synthetic or wool — never cotton (it stays wet and freezes you).

Our complete hiking gear guide details what to buy first.

What goes in the pack (the simplified 10 essentials)

  1. Water (more than you think)
  2. Salty and sweet snacks
  3. Rain shell (even under blue sky)
  4. Warm layer
  5. Charged phone + power bank
  6. Trail map (photo of the trailhead sign!)
  7. Mini first-aid kit + blister pads
  8. Headlamp
  9. Bug spray (June = mandatory)
  10. Whistle

How to dress

The 3-layer system: breathable base (synthetic/merino), insulation (fleece), shell (waterproof-windproof). Start slightly cool: your body warms up within 10 minutes.

Safety and weather

  • Check the MOUNTAIN forecast, not the city one (often 5-10 °C colder at the summit, with wind).
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you'll be back.
  • Turn around without shame if storms threaten: the summit will still be there next week.
  • Early and late season, check daylight hours — night falls fast in the forest.

Common beginner mistakes

  1. Picking an "instagrammable" trail that is too hard (Acropole-des-Draveurs is NOT a first hike).
  2. Starting too late: by 1 pm popular parking lots are full and afternoon storms loom.
  3. Cotton + jeans (heavy, cold, slow to dry).
  4. Not enough water.
  5. Following the GPS app without watching the trail markers.

FAQ

Best season to start? Late August-September: fewer bugs, mild temperatures, dry trails, fall colours as a bonus.

Do I need hiking poles? Not mandatory to start, but very useful downhill and for your knees once gain exceeds 300 m.

Is hiking expensive? Municipal and regional trails are often free; Sépaq parks charge about $10/adult/day.

Can I hike with my dog? Depends on the site: banned in most Sépaq parks (with exceptions), welcome in many regional parks. See our dog-friendly listings.
