SUP Fishing: Getting Started on a Paddle Board

Plein Air Québec·Published on August 14, 2026·📖 1 min read

Fishing from a paddle board: the right board, gear, stability and tips.

Quiet, stealthy and affordable, SUP fishing takes you where boats can’t go. Here’s how to start. A companion to our paddleboarding guide.

The right board

  • Wide and stable (34 in+), good weight capacity (you + gear + catch).
  • Anchor points / rails to mount a rod, cooler, anchor.
  • An inflatable board works great: stable, quiet, packable.

Basic gear

  • Light anchor to hold a spot.
  • Rod holder (or D-ring mount).
  • Dry bag / crate for tackle and phone.
  • PFD (required) and leash.

On the water

  • Fish seated or kneeling for more stability when casting and fighting fish.
  • Approach banks and weed beds silently — the #1 SUP advantage.
  • Manage the wind: anchor, or drift on purpose along structure.

A well-fitted PFD doesn’t hinder casting and is required on board.

Find calm water on the SUP spot map, and log your outings in your paddleboard log. Gear (board, anchor, dry bag) below.
