Get your dog used to the paddle board, safety (dog PFD) and tips for a great outing.
Paddleboarding with your dog is one of the best ways to share the water. With a little prep, most dogs love it. A companion to our paddleboarding guide.
Prep your dog (on land first)
- Let them explore the board on the ground, with treats.
- Teach a “up” and “stay” cue.
- Repeat until they climb on and sit calmly.
On the water
- Start kneeling, dog sitting in front of you, at the center.
- Stay near shore, on calm water, keep first outings short.
- Reward calm. Let them get used to the motion.
Safety
- Dog PFD with a handle on the back: even a strong swimmer tires in cold water, and the handle helps lift them back on.
- Keep nails trimmed (less risk of puncturing an inflatable).
- Bring water for them — dogs dehydrate fast in the sun.
An inflatable board, being softer and grippier, is often more comfortable for paws than a hard board.
