Paddleboarding With Your Dog: The Guide

Plein Air Québec·Published on August 14, 2026·📖 1 min read

Get your dog used to the paddle board, safety (dog PFD) and tips for a great outing.

Paddleboarding with your dog is one of the best ways to share the water. With a little prep, most dogs love it. A companion to our paddleboarding guide.

Prep your dog (on land first)

  1. Let them explore the board on the ground, with treats.
  2. Teach a “up” and “stay” cue.
  3. Repeat until they climb on and sit calmly.

On the water

  • Start kneeling, dog sitting in front of you, at the center.
  • Stay near shore, on calm water, keep first outings short.
  • Reward calm. Let them get used to the motion.

Safety

  • Dog PFD with a handle on the back: even a strong swimmer tires in cold water, and the handle helps lift them back on.
  • Keep nails trimmed (less risk of puncturing an inflatable).
  • Bring water for them — dogs dehydrate fast in the sun.

An inflatable board, being softer and grippier, is often more comfortable for paws than a hard board.

Ready? Pick calm water on the SUP spot map. PFDs (including dog PFDs) and gear below.
