Three ways to turn a paddle board: the reverse stroke, the sweep and the step-back turn.
Going straight is easy; turning efficiently is what separates a comfortable paddler. Three techniques, from simplest to sharpest. An excerpt from our tips to improve.
1. The basic turn (sweep)
Take one long arcing stroke, wide of the board, on one side. The wider the arc, the more the board turns. The simplest way to change course gently.
2. The reverse stroke (gentle pivot)
Plant the blade behind you and push forward: the tail comes toward the paddle, the nose swings the other way. Great for a slow-speed about-face.
3. The step-back turn (quick turn)
The most effective: step one foot back toward the tail (the nose lifts), then take one or two arcing strokes. The board pivots almost in place. Practice near shore — it takes balance.
Tip: always keep knees bent and eyes toward the turn.
Combine these strokes for the situation (wind, current). Want the whole thing from the start? The complete guide. Light paddles below.
