Two main fibre families compete. Merino wool regulates temperature, wicks moisture and above all doesn't hold odours, even after several days: it's the queen of multi-day outings. Synthetic fibres (polyester) dry faster, resist abrasion better and cost less, but hold odours more quickly.
Many models blend merino and synthetic to combine regulation, fast drying and durability. For intensive use during effort, this blend is often the best compromise.
The weight: light, mid or expedition
Thickness, given as weight (g/m²), determines warmth. A light model (around 150 g/m²) suits intense effort and mild temperatures: it wicks sweat fast. A mid weight (200-250 g/m²) is the most versatile for Quebec winters. An expedition weight, thick, is reserved for deep cold and low-intensity activities.
The right choice depends as much on the activity as the thermometer: the more you move, the more heat you produce, the less thickness you need. Conversely, staying still in the cold calls for a warmer model.
Moisture management, the key to comfort
