Our #1 pick

Sawyer
Meilleur choix global
$82.99

How to choose
Types of filters and purifiers
Several methods exist to make water drinkable while hiking. The filter straw drinks directly at the source. The filter bottle builds the filter into the container. The pump system forces water through a cartridge, handy in murky water. The gravity system, where water descends from a bag through the filter, resupplies a whole group effortlessly.
Alongside these mechanical filters, purification tablets and ultraviolet pens neutralise micro-organisms chemically or with light. Each method has its strengths depending on use, water volume and the weight you'll accept to carry.
What a filter really removes
It all depends on the filtration fineness. Most hollow-fibre filters stop bacteria and parasites (like Giardia) as well as the particles that cloud water, down to about 0.1 micron. However, they don't remove viruses, which are smaller: in regions or countries where that risk exists, you add tablets or ultraviolet treatment.
An activated carbon stage, present on some models, improves taste by capturing chlorine and the compounds that make water unpleasant. Always check what the filter treats before you leave: the presence of viruses or heavily loaded water changes the method to favour.
Flow rate, maintenance and lifespan
Flow rate decides comfort: a slow filter annoys when you're thirsty or resupplying several bottles. Murky water clogs the membrane and cuts the flow; you then backflush the cartridge to restore its performance. A well-maintained filter keeps a good flow for a long time.
Lifespan is given in litres treated: from a few thousand to many thousands of litres depending on the brand. Plan a spare cartridge for long expeditions, and protect the filter from frost, which cracks the fibres and makes it unusable.
Weight, volume and use
Match the system to the type of outing. For a light solo hike, a straw or filter bottle is enough and weighs almost nothing. For a group or base camp, a large-volume gravity system provides clean water without pumping. For travel abroad, you combine a filter with antiviral treatment.
Also think about the packed dimensions and ease of use at the source. The best filter is the one you'll bring and use effortlessly at every stream, rather than the most sophisticated left at the bottom of the pack.
Filter, tablets or ultraviolet?
The mechanical filter clarifies water and removes particles, bacteria and parasites, with a neutral taste: it's the go-to method for water from our lakes and rivers. Tablets, light and maintenance-free, serve as backup or treat viruses, but sometimes leave a chlorine taste. The UV pen neutralises everything in already-clear water, provided you have charged batteries.
Many hikers combine two methods: a main filter and backup tablets at the bottom of the pack. This redundancy, for a few grams, guarantees drinkable water in all circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
Does a water filter remove viruses?
Most hollow-fibre filters (0.1 micron) remove bacteria and parasites, but not viruses, which are smaller. In our Quebec lakes and rivers, that's rarely an issue; for risky regions or travel, add tablets or ultraviolet treatment.
Straw, pump or gravity system?
The straw or filter bottle suit the light solo hiker. The pump is handy in murky water and to fill a specific bottle. The gravity system resupplies a whole group or camp effortlessly. Choose by the number of people and water volume.
Is activated carbon useful in a filter?
Yes for taste: an activated carbon stage captures chlorine and the compounds that make water unpleasant. It doesn't replace micro-organism filtration, but it makes water far more pleasant to drink, especially from an off-tasting source.
How do you maintain a water filter?
Backflush the cartridge when the flow slows, let the filter dry after use, and above all protect it from frost: water freezing in the fibres cracks them and makes the filter unusable, invisibly. Replace the cartridge based on the litres treated.
Can you drink lake or river water in Quebec?
Never without treatment: even clear water can hold bacteria and parasites like Giardia. A hollow-fibre filter makes most of our waters drinkable. Preferably draw clear, running water, away from muddy banks.
Which filter for travelling abroad?
In countries where viruses are present in the water, a simple filter isn't enough. Combine a filter for particles, bacteria and parasites with antiviral treatment (tablets or ultraviolet), or choose a purifier designed to also remove viruses.
