How to choose
Types of ice cleats
'Ice cleats' cover several families. Soles with small spikes or chains, stretched over the boot by an elastomer harness, are for walking in the city and on icy sidewalks. Hiking cleats, with longer spikes, bite the packed snow of trails. True mountaineering crampons, with big steel points, attach to rigid boots for sheer ice.
The right choice depends on the surface and use: the harder the ice and steeper the slope, the longer the points and the more rigid the harness must be.
Points: steel, carbide and length
Grip comes from the points. Hardened steel keeps its bite for a long time; tungsten carbide, very hard, resists wear even on exposed asphalt. Short points (a few millimetres) are enough in the city; longer points are needed for packed snow and trails.
The number and layout of points also matter: spread under the whole foot, they give consistent stability at every step. Under the forefoot only, they suit urban walking but grip less on uneven terrain.
The fit: harness and hold
The fit keeps the cleat on the boot. Most walking models use an elastomer or soft rubber harness that stretches over the sole: easy to slip on, it fits several boot shapes. An extra strap over the top stops the cleat rotating under the foot.
Check that the harness stays flexible in the cold: poor-quality rubber hardens and tears in deep cold. A good hold keeps the points flat under the foot, ensuring stability and grip.
Size and fit
A cleat is chosen to the boot size, not the bare foot. Too large a harness slips and rotates; too small, it's hard to slip on and tires the rubber. Follow the maker's chart, which gives a shoe-size range per size, and try it with the boot you'll actually wear.
Once on, the cleat should neither move nor deform when you walk. A correct fit is what turns a simple spiked sole into real safety on ice.
Choosing by use: city or trail
To get to work and walk on icy sidewalks, light cleats with small spikes, easy to slip on and stow in a pocket, are plenty. For winter hiking on packed snow, move up with longer points and better coverage under the foot.
Keep a pair in your bag or car all winter: a patch of ice in the wrong place, and a few dollars of cleats prevent a fall and injury. It's the best-value safety accessory of the cold season.
Frequently asked questions
Which cleats for walking in the city in winter?
For icy sidewalks, light cleats with small spikes or chains, held by an elastomer harness that slips over the boot, are enough. They stow in a pocket and go on in seconds.
City or hiking cleats: what's the difference?
City cleats have short points spread for urban walking on ice. Hiking cleats have longer points and better coverage under the foot to bite packed snow and rough trails.
How do you choose your cleat size?
Choose by the boot size, not the bare foot, following the maker's chart. Try with the boot you'll wear: the harness should slip on firmly, without sliding or rotating under the foot.
Steel or carbide for the points?
Hardened steel keeps its bite for a long time and costs less. Tungsten carbide, harder, resists wear better, especially when crossing bare asphalt sections. Both offer good grip on ice.
Does the elastomer harness hold up in deep cold?
A quality elastomer stays flexible in deep cold and slips on without cracking. Low-end rubbers harden and tear below -20 °C: it's a point to check for winter use in Quebec.
Do cleats damage indoor floors?
Yes, the points mark floors and are slippery on hard, smooth surfaces. Always remove your cleats before going inside: that's also why an easy on-and-off model is so convenient day to day.
