Nous avons comparé les meilleurs bâtons de randonnée pour trouver les plus légers, solides et confortables — télescopiques ou pliables, en aluminium ou carbone.
Our #1 pick

Black Diamond
Meilleur choix global
$159.95

How to choose
The material: aluminium or carbon
Two materials dominate. Aluminium is sturdy and affordable: under extreme stress, it bends rather than snapping clean, which reassures far from anywhere. Carbon is lighter and dampens vibration better, a real advantage for hikers counting every gram, but it breaks more cleanly if wedged between two rocks.
The tip often ends in tungsten carbide, very hard, which bites rock and ice; a rubber cap goes over it for hard surfaces or storage. Most poles offer this good compromise between grip and versatility.
Length, adjustment and locking system
A pole at the right length puts the elbow at a right angle when the tip touches the ground. On rolling terrain, you lengthen the poles slightly on descents and shorten them on climbs: hence the value of quick adjustment.
The locking system keeps the pole at the right length under load. External levers adjust in one motion, even with gloves; internal twist locks are lighter but need careful tightening. A good lock never slips when you lean your full weight on it.
Grips, straps and comfort
The grip is the contact point for hours: cork wicks sweat and moulds to the hand, foam is soft and light, hard plastic suits occasional use. A grip that extends down lets you hold the pole lower on short climbs without readjusting the length.
Adjustable straps ease the wrists by transferring part of the effort to the forearm: used well, hand passed from below, they save constant gripping. It's one of the most underrated benefits of a good pair of poles.
Folding, telescopic and compact
Telescopic poles, in two or three sections, adjust finely in length. Folding poles, tent-style, collapse very compact to fit in a bag or on the side of the backpack for stretches where you don't need them. The most compact models appeal to trail runners and light travellers.
Look at the folded length and the weight per pair. A pole that stows quickly when you climb hands-free, then redeploys in one motion, gets used far more than a bulky model you leave at home.
What poles are really for
Climbing, poles engage the upper body and lighten the legs; descending, they absorb some of the shock that wears the knees. On rough terrain, they add two points of support for stability, precious with a heavy pack or during a stream crossing.
By season, you swap the baskets: small in summer, wide in snow so you don't sink. A set of spare baskets and rubber tips extend one pair's versatility all year round.
Frequently asked questions
What hiking pole length should you choose?
The right length puts your elbow at a right angle (90°) when the tip touches flat ground. An adjustable model lets you lengthen on descents and shorten on climbs. In store, set it and check the arm angle.
Aluminium or carbon?
Aluminium is sturdy, affordable and bends rather than snapping clean — reassuring far from anywhere. Carbon is lighter and dampens vibration better, but breaks more cleanly if wedged. For a first all-round purchase, aluminium is the safe choice.
External lever or twist lock?
The external lever adjusts fast, even with gloves, and is checked at a glance: ideal in winter and for frequent changes. The internal twist lock is lighter and cleaner but needs careful tightening so it doesn't slip under load.
Do poles really protect the knees?
Yes: on descents they absorb some of the shock that hits the knees, and on climbs they engage the arms to relieve the legs. On rough terrain or with a heavy pack, the stability gain is clear.
Should you get folding or telescopic poles?
Telescopic poles offer the finest length adjustment. Folding ones pack very compact, ideal for travel, trail running or hands-free sections. Choose based on room in your pack and your need for adjustment.
How do you use pole straps?
Pass your hand up through the strap before grabbing the grip: your wrist then rests on the strap, which transfers effort to the forearm. Well adjusted, they save constant gripping and rest the hands on long outings.
